Why I Did Not Graduate With A 1st Class Intentionally..
My name is Komolafe Daniel Oluwole. A graduate of OSUN STATE UNIVERSITY, 2015/2016 SET.
I graduated from the department of physics with electronics…I can vividly remember my first day in school, that September 2011. When I resumed 100L having leaving secondary school that same years, I had this agility and enthusiasm in me to come out with a first class just like my dad did. He had built the mentality in me that “it’s either a first class or nothing”. Having been a strict and “stubborn” man, I respected all what he said, and did as he wished. I dare not make mistake in anything he said I should do.
Now moving on!! with the mentality in me, 100Level 1st semester, mhennn I read like tomorrow was judgment day for all brilliant dudes, even the school did not help matters, they brought out a very tight time table. You can imagine MTH 101 and MTH 104 in the morning, and then almost
immediately we had PHY 101. People started complaining and shouting but forget what has been SET has been SET just like my lecturers will say. Those lecturers were like “gods” to me, I feared them ‘cus they really dealt with us then, having knowing that we were freshers and had no idea of how to calm them lectures down.
It was exam day and I was so ready like never before. I wrote the exam and “oh boi come see me”, I was like: “if I no get 5.0 GP, omo nah to go commit subside”. I was over confident that day.
Ghen! Ghen!!, it was result checking day, I woke up as early as 5AM, took my bath and was ready for school, on getting to school by 8AM, I was told that the secretary was to come by 9AM, waiting for 1hour was like waiting for a year. “na so time begin to sabi say e go slow”…..Finally, the secretary was around, people started rushing, pushing and co just to check their results, “as per me wer just enter school, I no sabi push, I always they form gentle. I was waiting for the line to reduce before I went to check my so called 5.0 GP… Ladies and gentlemen, to my surprise I was a 2.1 student with a GP of 3.98, it was a total shock to me, I started asking myself different kind of questions …
From that day hence I decided not to stress myself academically again. 100L 2nd semester was a brake through, came out with a 4.01 CGPA…
I came to realize that it’s not about what you know academically but how you can apply what you learnt. During my days in school, I intentionally skipped some classes just to take time with my computer , cus I loved to be a computer programmer and also a graphic designer, but the problem was that there was no one to teach me ‘cus people were busy with their own academic pursuit. I went online daily did some personal reading on graphic designs/java programs.
I was becoming so confident in what I was doing and collected same project for people at minimum amount, it was fun but don’t forget that’s not what my dad wanted. I balanced academics and my personal life despite the fact that I wasn’t on a 1st class. It was during my 200/300 days that ASUU caught up with me, (6 months) to those who could remember, I made use of this opportunity by reading more and also earning through it. It was like the strike shouldn’t end. On resumption, I was proud of the things I could do ‘cus I taught myself a lot of things that now earned me money.
After my IT in 300L I was on a 4.56 CGPA. It was nothing to me ‘cus I knew I could do better, but at the same time I needed to know other things in programming word, ‘cus for a new day there is always a new code of program so I had to be updated, I was so in love with coding that I missed most Physics class just to learn codes. The department produced just one 1st class student, but forget, he might be academically sound, but I am economically fresh and acceptable/brilliant too.
I didn’t regret falling so bad in a particular course; this reduced my grade point so badly. The only thing I was concerned about was my dad, when I tendered my final results to him, he was so happy cus he knew what I could do aside academics.
To caught the long story short, I graduated with a 2.1 with a CGPA of 4.2. I am happy I didn’t concentrate all my effort on academics ‘cus if I did, I will just be a geek who don’t know how to do any other thing, aside being brilliant. And with the way Nigeria and its Economy are going, they don’t need a geek, they need someone with extra ability.
I can confidently say, I am a PROUD PHYSICS GARDAUTE, A CERTIFIED GOOGLE (JAVA) PROGRAMMER, a WEB DESIGNER and also A GRAPHIC DESIGNER. #LEARN SOMETHING ELSE ASIDE BEING SMART
